chapter - mifflin

Off Campus Student Living in Madison, Wisconsin

Chapter Mifflin is the second off-campus student housing project in Madison Wisconsin from CRG. In the heart of Madison’s quirky Mifflin neighborhood Chapter Mifflin combines a series of sites formerly host to dilapidated homes into a seeping 6 story apartment building that spans between Washington Ave. and Mifflin St. As part of the design process, a significant community engagement and approvals process took place, ensuring that the sizable development respects the existing terrace trees and grand boulevard of Washington Ave just blocks from the states capitol. A brand new neighborhood plan, multiple neighborhood groups, and a passionate Urban Design Commission helped steer the buildings final expression and relationship to the surrounding context, setting up a precedent for upcoming adjacent development to follow.

Leaning into the history of the neighborhood, the building expresses a variety of balcony and porch conditions, with unique moments at main entries on Mifflin (above left) and Washington (below). Special attention is paid to the hierarchy between pedestrian paths, separating the prominent public entries and through-block connection from the more private residential walk up patios. Local art adorns the undersides of exterior soffits and back wall of the single loaded corridor above the publicly accessible path that runs from Washington to Mifflin, inviting passers-bye to explore the site and find a new shortcut to and from class.
